You look beat, girl, Clay ventured after he turned off the engine. She glanced at him, and at the sight of his concerned expression, she smiled and just nodded.
I think I can sleep tonight for sure, she commented.
You got what? About two hours last night? I mean before you covered me.
About that, I guess. I did sleep on Joes couch for a few hours, too, though?
Yeah, a whole five hours total since two or three days ago?
Smart guy, was all she said and opened the door. There, she found Chuck ready to help her out.
Hey, Bob, Clay called over the roof of the truck. Make sure that truck is locked and that you dont lock the keys in it. Bob nodded. Andie climbed up on the truck step and gave Clay a puzzled look.
There really is no need. . . . . she started but he interrupted.
Yes, there is a need. Whos to say that Bill guy wont come back here and try to steal something? Were not taking any unnecessary changes.
Agreed, came a chorus of male voices from the band. She nodded reluctantly and stepped back down to the ground. While the rest of the guys headed for their bunks in the barn, Clay and Andie followed them.
When they got in the room, they found there had been a few changes.
Looks like Joe was busy after we left, Clay commented. One set of bunk beds had been moved and a little room had been made with blankets strung around them. I think that is where youre supposed to sleep, he grinned.
Kinda looks that way, doesnt it? she smiled. Hey, Ill probably be up early, but Ill try not to wake you guys. I might be gone for a little while to get groceries.
No, he said.
But,
No, he repeated sternly. Wake me in the morning and Ill go with you. She started to protest but he shook his head. If for no other reason than Joes peace of mind. She nodded then.
You and Joe talked, didnt you?
A little.
Im glad. Night, Clay, she whispered.
Good night, girl. And she headed off for the curtained off bunk and disappeared behind the blankets.
