Beck and I and the kids are just making our way to the beach for one last day of sand and surf, when I notice that instead of being happily spread out on towels or sprawled in beach chairs, the Ross family is pretty much standing in a group.
"Looks like something is going on." Beck states the obvious.
I quickly do a head count of kids and quickly realize that all of them are present and accounted for. Thank goodness.
"Here." I hand Jack off to Beck. "Why don't you and the kids settle in while I find out what's going on."
Beck seems a bit put out but he follows instructions anyway. I'm sure those reporter instincts of his are offended by my request. But until I know what's up and how serious it is, I'd rather not involve him. I go over to everyone, squeezing between Annie and Louise, both of whom have worried expressions on their faces.
"What's going on?" I ask the obvious.
Annie whirls around to face me. "Do you know where Dad is?"
I take a step back, just to put at least a step between us. "Ummm, no, should I?" Is it a question or is she expecting me to guess that he's decided to be a daredevil and do something foolish like parasailing.
"I'm just asking," she snaps back, then takes a deep breath. "Look, I'm sorry Pam. That was pretty rude of me but Dad was supposed to go with Tom, Logan and Uncle Hank this morning. They had an early tee time and he didn't show up."
I'll admit it is a little odd; Joe is usually the guy on time all the time. But I'm willing to give him the benefit of doubt. "Maybe he slept in?" Okay, that would be even weirder; he's also a dedicated early riser. Him and the sun go hand in hand.
"He didn't sleep in his room," Louise tells me. "We checked."
That gets me frowning. "What about the kids?"
"They stayed with Paige and Meghan," Annie offers up a reminder. "They all wanted a sleep over before heading home tomorrow."
"I forgot," I admit. It was quite the topic of discussion during the anniversary party last night. Lily was telling anyone who'd listen about all the fun she was going to have with her brother and sister and nieces.
Katy would have gone too, but she was already sound asleep when Beck and I came back from our walk. The memory of those moonlit kisses has me looking back to where Beck is sitting. I can't help wondering where we go from here. We didn't have much time to ourselves to talk this morning, both kids were awake with the dawn's early light.
"Did Joe call you at all? Give a hint as to where he was going?" Hank's voice interrupts my wandering thoughts.
I can't help but laugh, "Joe call me? Fill me in on his plans? I don't think so. Maybe he went for an early morning walk and stopped to talk to someone." I suggest but as soon as the words are out of my mouth I know that wouldn't happen. Joe Ross is very conscientious when it comes to letting his family know where he is or what he's doing. Well, almost all his family, then again I don't really count as family anymore do I? "Have you tried calling his cell?"
Hank nods. "It just goes to voicemail so either he's been on a call all the time, or he's got it turned off." He gives a gruff laugh. "Don't even know why I'm so damn concerned. He's a grown man, he's certainly entitled to do whatever the hell he wants."
"It's not like him to set something up, even if it's just a golf game and then miss it," Annie insists. "Something's happened to him."
"Now honey, your Dad is probably the best equipped out of all of us to take care of himself," Tom tries to soothe but Annie's having none of it.
She brushes Tom's hand away and pulls out her own cell phone. "Maybe we should call the police."
"Or you could call the one person that probably does know where Joe is?" I say as I put a hand on Annie's arm stopping her from dialing.
"Who?" she asks.
"Think for a minute, who is the one woman that Joe just can't seem to leave alone? The one with the children that he never questioned their paternity? Wouldn't surprise me at all if he's holed up in whatever hotel it was that he and Morgan stayed in once upon a time. He's probably reliving old memories, remembering the good old days. Hell, they've probably been on the phone all night crying one each other's shoulders about how their marriages are over, blah, blah blah."
That gets everyone talking at once and its not until Hank finally hollers out a loud "Be quiet, everyone!" that silence rains once again; at least for a moment or two.
Then Annie is disagreeing. "No way. Why would he do that? And even if he did I doubt it would make him stay out of touch with the rest of us." From the look on everyone else's face it seems Annie and I are in the minority when it comes to Morgan. Hank, for one, is a huge supporter of hers and I get the impression he isn't impressed with my comment. Whatever, I've stopped being too concerned what other people think these days. If I've learned anything in the past year, its that I don't need to bite my tongue on any topic.
Hank reaches out, plucking the phone out of Annie's hand and quickly dials a number. Three guesses who he's trying to call and the first two don't count.
Deciding that I've had enough of this, I ask Annie to let me know if they find Joe and I walk away. If something has happened to him there's nothing I can do anyway. And I really don't want to know if he was talking to Morgan all night. If he was, I feel sorry for Chris. He loves her so much. He loves her the way I want some one to love me.
Damn it. I was in a perfectly wonderful mood thirty minutes ago.
Damn you Joe Ross.
